The collection consists primarily of Van Dyke's Civil War letters to his family in Ripley County, and to his fiance Alice Kent in Jefferson County. Also included are letters from Vincennes (1860-1861) and letters to Alice Kent from Nashville, Tennessee in 1866.

Augustus M. Van Dyke moved from Ohio to Princeton, Gibson County, Indiana in 1860 where he practiced as an attorney. He enlisted as a first sergeant in the 14th Indiana Regiment in 1861 and rose to the rank of lieutenant. The Army of the Potomac was created after the defeat of Union forces at the First Battle of Bull Run. Its objective was to defend Washington, D.C. by protecting the Potomac River entry into the city. The Army of the Potomac participated in the Peninsula Campaign, the Seven Days' Battles, Antietam, Gettysburg and Appomatox.
